Comedy from Rude Island January 4, 2003 Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) 17 out of 21 found this review helpful
Jim Carrey remarks that you should "leave your taste at the door" in one of the vignettes included as extras in "Me, Myself & Irene." I think that is the key to enjoying this over-the-top comedy. Produced by the Farelley Brothers, the comedy is vulgar (toilet humor, plenty of swears) but manages to be original despite the humdrum plot device of running from bad guys and the police. Jim Carrey gets to showcase his rubberface technique, but though he has to play two characters Charley and Hank, he is able to rein in his antics. (Mostly) Anthony Anderson, Mongo Brownlee and Jerod Mixon as Charley's sons are utterly hysterical and they steal the screen every time they are on. In particular, the scene where they fly a helicopter, reading the German instructions, is priceless. They manage to upstage Carrey, and that takes some doing. My only quibble woth the humor was the cow scene, which I thought was in even worse taste than the watermelon scene that was cut from the final edit. But...there's no accounting for taste. Don't say I didn't warn you. Since this is film done by New Englanders, it's a visual treat as well for anyone homesick for the region. The Farrelley brothers also include all their buddies and childhood friends as extras in the film--a fun touch and also very New England, where you might never travel more than 100 miles from home and your schoolyard friends stay with you until old age. DVD stuff: Sound: unremarkable, the surround sound was done well--not obtrusive and very realistic. Soundtrack: excellent--stands on its own. Extra features are enjoyable.
There's Something About Carrey November 21, 2000 Bradley Tobin (Penrith, Sydney NSW Australia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are about 4 or 5 scenes in this film that literally had me falling out of my seat (the only other films to ever do that were "The Nutty professor" {the dinner with the family scenes} and "Blazing Saddles"), the rest of the film could have been Jim watching paint dry, and it would still get 5 stars. But Jim doesn't watch paint dry, he nearly kills himself with his physical form of comedy, and boy does it pay off. There is no other comedian on the planet (Eddie Murphy is Hot on Jims tail) that can be as hysterically funny as Jim. He is a true geneous. The rest of the cast all play third fiddle to Charlie and Hank, though his three sons get their fair share of laughs. An all-round Comedy Classic. PS. For Real Jim Carrey fans, its worth the price just to hear Jim finally say the F word.
Surprisingly hilarious! June 24, 2001 K. Hill (Windsor, NC USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film was simply hilarious. I could not predict what was going to happen from one moment to the next. When I first heard of the concept of this film and saw the commercials for it, I thought it would be too silly and stupid to be funny. I was so wrong. It's filled with one laugh after another. I loved it. It's the type of film I could watch again and again. For those with kids, this is a Jim Carrey film and it is not intended for a young audience. There's too much profanity for that. My boyfriend is usually bothered by bathroom humor but was not bothered by this. You'll have to use your own judgement on that one. I was surprised that so many people seemed not to like the film. I rented it, but I certainly would not hesitate to purchase it.
I had to see it to believe it July 21, 2000 Jane James (California) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If I had HEARD about this movie I would have decided it was rude, disrespectful, obscene and vulgar. The truth is, it IS those things, but it's just SO FUNNY that it's so INTENSELY all those things. It's a parody of rudeness, disrespect, obscenity and vulgarity in movies. We're talking OVER THE TOP here. It helps that the camera work is beautifully done (some of the scenery is just gorgeous -- and as a backdrop for the slapstick, often disgusting humor of Carrey, it makes the joke doubly funny), the acting is good, Zellweiger is fun to watch (even as much as Carrey is), and the supporting actors are all very talented as well. The story itself is really hilarious. The fact that this movie is so well done, makes the obscenity easier to observe - and even funnier. I'm a pretty staid person. If you look at my profile, you'll see I'm a mother of six little kids. A wild night for me is watching SNL with my husband (and we can't usually manage to stay up that late) and I am telling you that this movie is EXTREMELY vulgar. But it's one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I'm the one who frowns at degrading jokes and comments, "that's just disrespectful, it isn't funny..." There were parts during this movie that I was laughing so hard I couldn't sit straight in my chair. I never laughed so hard at a movie in my life! The entire audience was rolling in their seats, too. What a trip! (By the way, in case you're not a mom and you've seen the movie, I can tell you that babies really DO look that way when they nurse! I almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard during that scene.) I can recommend this one to just about any adult -- but you can't go into it waiting to be offended - if you can't find the humor in stereotypes, then skip this one. If just the sight of a dildo is likely to make you faint, definitely do not go see this movie! Otherwise, I heartily recommend this one to you. We're buying ours as soon as it's released on dvd.
Great, Great stuff November 7, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this movie to be incredibly funny and right on the same level as Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and Something About Mary. There are those who don't like those movies so if you didn't like those, I wouldn't watch this. On the other hand, if you lighten up a little and take the movie for what it is, it is a classic comedy in my opinion.
